#13 Jolene Hale – Dropped 8 Pant Sizes with Keto – Ketonian Korner

Jolene Hale is the founder of Ketonian Korner, another successful keto podcast.

Jolene is currently 45 years old and  has struggled with weight her whole life.  She started out as a chubby baby moving into a pudgy child then on to a chunky teenager and finally landing at a morbidly obese adult.

In April of 2014 (first pic), she was at her heaviest weight – 264 pounds, size 22 and 5’3”. She had been diagnosed with prediabetes and went into denial.  Jolene refused to take medicine, because she didn’t want “to be diabetic”.  Six months later the Dr. informed her that she had full blown type 2 diabetes and need

ed to take the meds.

Again, she refused and realized this wasn’t going away on it’s own and she needed to do something. In December of 2014, she made the decision to make a change.

Jolene started a low carb diet, as instructed by a physician, and worked out 6 days a week, but there was little to no structure in the diet and she felt a bit perplexed.
The doctor instructed her to eat 60-90 grams of protein and low carb.  Jolene lost weight, but felt she needed more structure.  She started searching the internet and stumbled on the Ketogenic Diet and started eating Keto on April 16, 2016 at 176 pounds & size 18.  Today, Jolene weighs in at 151 and size 9/10, Losing a total of 10 sizes.
She adds chopped pickles, mayo and mustard – yumbo!

SHOW NOTES

  • Had weight problem her whole life
  • Have 6 sister, but none of the have weight issues
  • Was diagnosed with pre-diabetes in 2012 – in denial
  • In the year 2013 she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and still in denial
  • Asked her doctors for help but was still unable to lose weight
  • I did the right things.
I ate healthy and I did the exercise thing
  • I knew there was something wrong, I just don’t know what it was
  • My gynecologist told me that if I keep out the spoon off my mouth, then I will lose weight. And that was his only advice for me
  • I was very upset.
  • My first diet my mom put me on was the Cambridge diet.
Nothing but the liquid shakes. I was 8 or 9 at that time
  • All of these doctors were telling me that it was me.
  • I thought I was doing something wrong and could not figure out what

  • When I met my husband, he did not care. So, I kind of gave up
  • And that’s when I started packing the pounds on.
I stopped going to the gym and I would just eat what I wanted because nothing was helping anyway.
  • Unfortunately, my husband and me packed a little bit of weight
  • In December 2014, after I saw that picture, I went to my husband and I have to do something
  • I still refuse to take medication for diabetes, but decided to change the way that I ate
  • I have done Atkins in the past and worked for me as long as I am in the induction phase. But the minute I start eating food, I start gaining weight again
  • I was under the advisement of a doctor.
    He gave me some guidelines.
  • So I did that for a long time
  • I started that in January 2015 and I ended up losing about 84 pounds just by lowering carbs. But I really did not know what I was doing
  • I still did not feel very well
  • One day, I was watching Dr. Oz
  • Oz was talking about this crazy diet and the guy starts talking about this coffee he drinks every morning
  • It kind of peeked my interest and they mentioned Ketogenic diet, so I started researching that and stumbled upon to more
  • The very first thing that I did with Keto was listening to one of his podcast with Dr. Nally
  • To be honest, it was life changing
  • I truly owe my success, health and happiness right now to Jimmy and Dr. Nally
  • The first day on the Ketogenic diet is April 16, 2016
  • It was not that hard for me just because I have done Atkins in the past
  • I went down 3 pants sizes with the 84 pounds
  • Since Keto, I have lost just over 27 pounds but I have gone down 4 pants sizes
  • I never started the diabetic medication, but I am not diabetic and pre-diabetic

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?

  • I finally found what works for me.
  • My thighs were achy. They felt very weird
  • I reached out somebody on Facebook and he told me to add some proteins if it helps. And I did. I stayed somewhere between 60 or 65 and I feel fine now
  • That was kind of my sweet spot
  • I tell people is to don’t stress about those
  • Keep your macros
  • Do it for a few weeks and if you don’t feel great, adjust it and try it again.
Once you found what is right for you then you just stick to it
  • I try to help people not to through all of that pain with the macro calculator
  • I used to put everything in the tracker and I found that I was stressing myself out by just doing that
  • I do recommend that when people start it for about the first 2 weeks to track it. Because we are so disconnected with food and what nutrition really is.
We can’t visually look at food anymore and know what we should be eating and what we shouldn’t
  • So I really encourage people for the first few weeks or first month to weigh everything and to track it. So that by the end of that, you can visually look at something and know whether that is the portion size for you or not
  • I do not like net carbs
  • I think that most people who do net carbs, it kind of gives them to not be as good as they could be
  • For me, I eat vegetables. I am not a huge vegetable eater, but if I wan to eat them then I do and I don’t worry about it. If I go 20, I am fine
  • I don’t eat things like the halo ice cream.
In my own opinion, I thing subtracting sugar alcohols is dangerous for people
  • If you want to eat it, just eat it. Don’t make up rules to change what you’re doing

  • I do eat Keto treats. I do make them occasionally.
I am not a big sweet fan. So that is not a big issue for me
  • If I want to eat it then I will eat it and I don’t feel like it is a cheat because I also don’t think that you have to have macros dialed in every single day
  • I did try to do an extended fast. Unfortunately, I got very sick.
  • Looking back on it, I think I was trying to take salt everyday so I did not feel bad and I think I had too much
  • My husband’s goal and me were 72 hours.
  • I ended up getting sick about hour 36
  • So I had reached out to a friend who does fasting a lot
  • He said if I do not feel bad, it is okay. But if I am not feeling good, break the fast.
  • I am not going to risk it and push it and I had some food, and I was fine.
  • In the back of m mind, I tell myself that it is time to try it, but I haven’t jumped on that one yet
  • Quite honestly, mine was just a mental thing.
  • I wanted to do it because I was curious. But I couldn’t just fast
  • I knew that I wasn’t hungry and I knew I didn’t eat anything, but I kept watching my watch
  • Tom challenged me, but I know I cannot passed up that challenge so, I told myself I am going to do it.
  • After we interviewed Tom, my husband and I decided what are we going to do
  • My husband made it longer than I did. He did it for 67 hours and he could have gone any longer. But I did not have any dinner that night and I was coming home from work late and he put some steak on the grill and he told himself that he is going to eat dinner that night
  • I don intermittent fasting daily and I also do coffee, and put butter on my coffee
  • I will eat dinner somewhere 6:30 PM or 6:00 PM and I don’t typically eat breakfast somewhere around 10:30 AM or 11:00 AM

FAVORITE THING ABOUT KETO OR SUCCESSES

  • The freedom.
I kind of have this freedom from food.
I don’t really think about it anymore. Food is not something that I stress about. I know what I am allowed to it and I am not stress about it anymore. So for me, that has been so freeing
  • The one thing is amazing for me is that, for years I have gone to the doctor telling them that I felt weird – my mind felt weird. I had brain scans done and they kept telling me there was nothing going on.
Once I started Keto, all of that went away
  • Mental clarity for me has been out of this world.
I can’t even describe my entire life of how I felt.
  • Now, I just feel wonderful.
  • Before, I could not focus on stuff, but it was not because I was distracted. It was almost like a lazy brain. It was so awful.

TOUGH SPOTS

  • Breaking it to people that I don’t eat the same as they do
  • The persistence
  • And even people not understanding that this is a lifestyle
  • Thankfully, I have a strong personality. Although it bothered me that family members and friends have those thoughts and feelings about it. But I was at least strong enough to stay to my conviction and perseverance

ADVICE

  • Keep it simple
  • Don’t go to all of those recipes
  • Eat your meats and keep it really simple in the beginning until you get the hang of it and then once you have found you sweet spots in dealing with the food, then you can reach out and try.
  • Do not compare yourself. You will react differently
  • Just focus on your own journey

WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU?

  • I do a podcast with one of my guys I am working with, so we are really working at reaching out and putting together a cook book
  • Just simple and easy recipes to help people get over that hurdle and get on the journey
  • John and I started the podcast in early April

  • I never had a children on my own and that’s one of my motivator
  • To help people having fertility issues cause by these insulin resistance, diabetes or PCOS

  • I do have PCOS
  • Now, most of my symptoms are minimal or completely gone
  • First time that I have actually have a regular cycle in 32 years of going through that.
