#6 Miriam & Chris Bair – Lost 60 lbs & Keto Flu Cure

Miriam and Chris Bair are the husband and wife team behind Keto Chow. They have been married 17 years and have 6 children, including two sets of twins.

Their first introduction to Keto was a passing reference from a neurologist – that if they couldn’t find an anticonvulsant to help one of their sons’ epilepsy soon, their son would need to go on a “ketogenic diet” – fortunately, he is doing extremely well now.
Chris started doing Keto 3 years ago this month to lose weight and Miriam jumped on the bandwagon about a year and a half ago. Keto Chow was created in January 2015 after Chris had a rather rough time with Keto Flu while getting started doing Keto – the aim was to make a nutritionally complete keto food that tastes good and has all the electrolytes, vitamins, minerals, fiber, fat, and protein you need to thrive on Keto  – an “engineered staple food” you could entirely live on if you wanted to.
Originally made for his own use, the recipe to make Keto Chow was, and still is, available for all to use – “open source” if you will. People wanted to be able to use Keto Chow without having to buy all the powdered ingredients in bulk and get their kitchen messy so Chris and Miriam started selling it pre-mixed on the web. The operation outgrew their house and they now use a contract manufacturer for all the mixing and packaging and ship out of a warehouse near their home.
Currently, they’re working on getting their children doing Keto, or at least eliminating sugar from the house.

HOW DID YOU FIND KETO?

Miriam:

  • We have two sons and our oldest son started having epileptic seizures
  • We went through 12 different medicines for anti-convulsive medicines for him. We found one that worked and so we tried the medicines, but they told us that if it doesn’t work, we’re going to put him into Ketogenic diet
  • We thought that it was hard
  • He actually tapered off and doesn’t have seizures anymore.
  • Hopefully, he never ever have seizures anymore
  • He didn’t have any seizures in 5 years. So he is doing fantastic

Chris:

 

  • I read through the information they gave to us and I was like, “This is like way crazy.” Because I was still in the sad mentality in the whole deal
  • Couple of years later I just started doing Keto
  • Just kind of on my own because I wanted to lose weight
  • I didn’t research it very well and I ended up getting Keto flu and I felt bad
  • And so I googled Keto Flu and made myself some chicken broth and I felt better
  • Nowadays, I just drink pickle juice if I am feeling under the weather
  • I lost about 60 pounds
  • It was almost 3 years ago this month that I started.
    October 20-something in the year 2014
  • I was down to 60 pounds after about 8 months

 

Miriam:

  • Our son’s name is Max
  • Since Keto Con, we came home and we put him on Keto
  • We have been on Keto for a long time and we know what we need to be doing to eat
  • So, we kind of talk to our kids like, “Hey, do you want to do this? We feel like it’s so important.” and a couple of them said yes including Max
  • So he has been doing Keto since Keto Con and very 4 or 5 days he’ll forget his lunch and have school lunch. He’ll come back and say that there’s only carbs at school. So he goes off and on
  • But he’s got this high metabolism, he is super skinny and little so I think he’ll probably burn up faster and gets back to Ketosis that I would
  • He acts better and feels better

 

 

Chris:

  • Teachers noticed the difference
  • We used to be can tell the difference the days when they would eat cereal for breakfast and there’s just bacon and eggs days. And so we want to move towards that

 

Miriam:

  • He used to have a lot of problems because of the seizures
  • He’s slow. It’s like his brain was on paused for that year and a half and so he has been catching up for these past 5 years
  • He had problem with behavior thing and that’s all because of the seizures
  • Keto has helped him get a little faster, get a little more up to speed and have more clarity
  • It’s not perfect. He’s not totally a changed person but I can totally tell the difference and that is huge

 

 

Chris:

  • I don’t want to through with the Keto flu again
  • I basically came up with a recipe off all the electrolytes you need, all the vitamins, minerals, fibers, protein, and fat basically everything you need for a day divided by three, mix together into a recipes. It come together as a drink
  • I wanted to make an engineered staple, because I would have to go to work, I would be there breakfast and lunch and I come home for dinner. So, I just wanted something I just can grab
  • Before I started Keto, I was in Soylent. So this is the way to do it but on Keto version
  • 81 grams of proteins, 9.5 grams of carbohydrates, and you control the fats either more or less depending on what you put, like heavy cream or avocado oil, or MCT oil
  • Miriam doesn’t need a lot of calories and fat than I do

  • The reason that I made that is to make Keto easier
  • I spent a lot of time on reddit and some of the popular questions are, “I am on a dorm. I can’t do anything.” And I am like, “Well you can do Keto Chow.”
  • I really just want to help people do Keto
  • We did not start Keto at the same time
  • She was more into the whole 30

 

 

Miriam:

  • It was hard, because I am making the meals for my kids, making a meal for me and making a meal for Chris
  • He’s was having his Keto Chow and I am having this nice meal I made for myself and my kids are eating potatoes
  • I lost 30 pounds on the whole 30
  • Whole 30 was like the step I needed to get to Keto because they are quite similar
  • It’s like Keto with fruit and no dairy
  • Keto is our life
  • This is how we’re going to live for the rest of our live
  • It’s going to take a while to get our kids on board, but I’ve been living like this for a year and a half when I started
  • My kids doesn’t have to have Keto Chows, they can have eggs and bacons and everything

 

Chris:

  • It has been really interesting
  • We went to a family trip and we did not bring anything that have carbs in it
  • The closest thing that carbs we had was low-carb tortillas
  • So they kind of all started being Keto whether they like it or not
  • And we make a pretty epic breakfast when we go camping

 

ADVICE

Chris:

  • Make sure you get your electrolytes
  • Put salt on everything. You’ve been lied to about the effects of salt
  • Eat some avocados for potassium
  • Keep calm and Keto on

 

Miriam:

  • And drink enough water
  • Don’t give up
  • Don’t ever cheat
  • I am a sugar addict
  • I really have a hard time not wanting all the sweets and when I even just taste just 1 bit, I just want more
  • So, If I just don’t, it’s just better
  • We do Keto treats
  • But they’re expensive and you have to get the right sugar and alcohols, otherwise you’ll feel sick

Miriam:

 

  • Getting our kids on Keto
  • Just want to help anybody wants to be on Keto
  • I kind of gained weight. I kind of go back and forth for a long time because I’ll go binging
  • So I lost 30 pounds on whole 30 but I did not go straight into Keto, then I kind of gained a weight and I have lost 30 pounds
  • It’s just the same 30 pounds back on
  • So, it’s just kind of a roller coaster for me
  • But I have been doing better now
