#10 Harriett Roman – Shed 90 lbs

 

Harriett Roman is a happily married, 31 year old, mother of 5, and is fortunate to be able to stay home with them.  As a Colorado resident, she enjoys running, weight lifting, cooking & photography.

SHOW NOTES

BEFORE KETO

 

  • It kind of of all started for me3 years ago
  • More to my husband. He has always had an inflammation.
    He’s always hurting his knees or back
  • One day we were just sitting on the couch and an infomercial of wheat belly popped up and we started listening to it and said maybe it has something to do of what he is eating
  • So I told him that we would try it
  • We started eliminating all the grains and he noticed a lot of improvements with him for the first 2 weeks. He stuck to that pretty good.
  • But, now that I look back to it, since it was a lower carb version – we weren’t feeling all that good.
  • So we would occasionally go back to having wheat, pasta and stuff
  • That was initially started to opening our eye up to Keto
  • During this time, I was actually pregnant for my last baby – my 5th child
  • After baby, I was trying to lose weight
  • I had already lost weight twice before that
  • I would always get back to my pre-pregnancy weight
  • But it’s always been a struggle to get those pounds down
  • What I thought was working for me was the high protein. I always just focus on protein, but I was hungry all the time which really suck because I thought I was doing really good
  • Sometimes, I was putting in 40 or 50 grams of protein just in my morning shake, and 2 hours later I get hungry.
  • I did see my weight come off, but very slowly
  • The last time, I only ended up losing 15 pounds in the whole entire year
  • I still saw it as a progress, because 15 pounds is a lot, but it was really hard since I was constantly restricting myself
  • At that time, I was doing a lot of running. So I basically would run to be able to eat and if I want to see my scale go down, the I will run in the morning and at night, 10 or 15 miles everyday
  • I have tried a lot of nutrition approaches
  • But nothing really stuck because it s really hard when you restrict yourself
  • I would thing that I was doing good for a week then I would start having some cravings and I would give in, because I was depriving myself
  • Our main focus was eliminating all the grains
  • And I never implemented fat for fuel, so my replacement for grains was chicken breast, tuna and turkey.
    I had no clue anything about fat.
  • My husband did feel a difference just by eliminating the grains.
    He felt good, but that temptation is always there. He always ends up giving in.
  • Nobody in my family has focused on you have to be in a certain weight or you have to look in a certain way
  • But through this whole entire time, I have really implemented really active

HOW DID YOU FOUND KETO?

  • I was at the 1 year mark of my last baby around July of last year
  • I had a Facebook page and I saw a lady on there who posted her transformation, and obviously I was curious
  • So I reached out to here, and asked what kind of nutrition she is doing, and she mentioned Keto.
  • And I started searching it on Google and joined all kinds of groups that are about Keto
  • I joined a lot of groups, and that I think was my downfall, because there are so many ways people doing on Keto
  • I ended up doing carb reefed and that was the worst mistake I ever did.
    I gained weight back and I was having cravings so bad. It was really hard.
  • I could not get back on track and I was feeling horrible
  • Me and my husband recommitted Christmas of last year
  • We made it through the holidays
  • My husband is 80% Keto, but I stick to Keto all the time.
  • When I did start it, the weight came off so fast
  • I was running but it was only 2 or 3 miles a day
  • The weight came off very effortlessly, but it was no eating out
  • I was just making all of our food and just sticking on our plans
  • I did do a lot of research.
    Because after that first time I felt like something went wrong.
  • I needed to be able to stick to it, because at that point I already felt really good, I’m proud of myself and I haven’t have any cravings. So I told myself that this time, nothing going to come off
  • I joined another Facebook group and that’s where I found Ketovangelist and the Keto Athletes
  • I started going through their Facebook page and see what they encourage and did they encourage and a lot of things made sense to me
  • What helped me a lot too is to focus on the stuff that I could have
  • There hasn’t been a day, till to this day that I am like, “What am I going to have for breakfast or lunch?”
  • I think finding all kinds of recipes is what really helped me
  • Most of the time I cook 2 different meals
  • But most of the time, they end up eating our food because I made big batches
  • I made cookies and pizza, and they really enjoy the stuff that I made
  • My goal from 8 years ago when I started dieting, all I would look at was my calories
  • Whatever I ate did not matter to me as long as I am in my fit calorie intake
  • It never registered to me to look at my fat and carb intake.
  • Right now I am about 130 or 140 range of fat intake

A DAY IN YOUR DIET

  • Before, I was doing 3 actual meals
  • In the morning I would have some bacon, cheese and avocados
  • For lunch, I would have some shredded beef, broccoli with butt, the other type of meat through out the day with some more cabbage or cauliflower
  • I did not introduce the bulletproof coffee until I was 4 or 5 months into Keto just because I have never been a big coffee person
  • And now, I finally have the courage to try bulletproof coffee and I really enjoyed it, and I found out it was keeping me fuller for a long time
  • So now, I transitioned for having a bulletproof coffee every morning and make myself 3 cups all together
  • I start drinking coffee around 7:00 AM and pretty much lasted me around 9:300 AM or 10:00AM
  • Around 12:00 noon is when I actually have my first meal with bacon and eggs or ground beef and cabbage, and cheese with some salsa.
  • I tried eating around 3:00 PM or 4:00 PM just because I do have my kids on a routine. Pretty much by 8:00 PM, everybody is already in bed
  • I feel better if I eat earlier in the day
  • Since it is pretty cold from where I am at, I incorporated a second bulletproof coffee at after 4:00 PM
  • Some people asked be what I am doing at 3:00 in the morning since I have my bulletproof coffee and I told them I have no problems in sleeping
  • The coffee doesn’t keep me up at all in days or night, so that’s what I have been doing now.
  • I feel really good at 18 to 20 hour mark of fasting, but I do have a fatty coffee.
    Some people say it’s not really fasting, but it works for me.
    I’ve done it for awhile now and it keeps my hunger down and I feel really good
  • I tell people that if you’re hungry, eat. But if you’re not then don’t

 

TOUGH SPOTS

  • When I started I really did not have that one person that I could go to with any type of questions I was having
  • I have to research it and be kind of really prepared on my own
  • So it was tough for me
  • Sometimes, I have a question and I would look at multiple references and trying to figure out what was going on. I think that was such a challenge
  • And now I feel like there’s a lot of support out there
  • At first it was really tough especially since I have an experience where people were pushing different things and I do not know what to believe
  • Everybody that came my way, I was telling them that they should try what I am doing because it changed my way of thinking about food, and honestly, people that are not reaching out to you is just really a waste of time because they are not interested in what you’re trying to say
  • So I wasted a lot of time trying to get people try Keto
  • Now, a lot of people reach out to me
  • So I have to learn to just show them with my results
  • I always tell people that it is not just about weight-loss. Like it could also help with so many mental things going on. There’s tons of thing that it can help you with
  • No diet has ever said that you’re going to feel good in this diet and that’s what I explain to people
  • With just Keto I am down with 25 pounds within the last year. The weight came off in just two months and I was at my goal
  • I have to reevaluate my goal because I reached it so quick, so I dropped another 5 pounds
  • If it would have been just a diet then I would just have been completely gone off and went back to whatever I was doing
  • In that short amount of period, I was feeling so good

 

ADVICE

  • Do your research.
    Find out what you’re going to be feeling. Make sure you know your salt in your food, water and you’re getting those electrolytes
  • I tell people that if you’re feeling bad, you need salt, potassium or magnesium
  • I ran into some people who are more afraid to salt than fat
  • What works for me also is to run my pre-plan. Kind of see what I am working with and in that way I am not just sitting there trying to figure out what am I going to eat
  • I like to put some kind of meat in my crockpot, in that way I have a big batch of meat and anytime if I feel like to eat, there’s my meat. Like, if you need something really quick and it’s there. Kind of preparing in advance
  • Try to fine a support system or somebody you can reach out to.
    That way if you have questions or if you doubt yourself they can help you.

 

OTHER HEALTH BENEFITS

  • Control of what I am putting in my mouth
  • Before I have no self-control at all. I would just eat and I could not stop
  • Now, if I want to eat then I eat and if I don’t then I don’t have to
  • As soon as I wake up, I am ready to start my day
  • Most of the time I am up before my alarm clock even goes off, before I have to hit that alarm clock before I wake up
  • It improves the quality of myself
  • I am energized. That energy is all day long
  • As before, I would take my nap together with my toddler
  • Before I was constantly hungry
  • If I was reaching my 3 point mark of my last meal I would notice myself like really shaking and in bad mood
  • Now, I do my fasting.
    Sometimes it is 4 or 5 hours between my meals and I am not shaking and irritable anymore
  • My skin has also cleared up
  • I used to get really bad really big bumps and it would take like 2 or 3 weeks to go away and I haven’t have those for a long time now
  • My cycle is like a breeze right now
  • I don’t even care that I am on my cycle
  • I am not having cravings, and being moody. It has been wonders with Keto on my cycle
  • Before, it was very low fat, so at that time, it was really hard and painful. So I am pretty sure that the fat has a lot to do with what it is now

 

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?

  • I did transition into the weights because with Keto, you don’t really have to be doing the cardio all the time to see results
  • I was able to focus to a lot more stuff and time for myself, or just having for time not being on the treadmill or whatever. That is one thing I do want just because I let it go for so long and I really enjoyed it
  • I want to get back to running
  • I hopefully want to join a marathon in the summer
  • Me and my husband do weightlifting now for 5 times a week
  • I have to push myself when I can.
  • With Keto it has been a lot easier.
    Minimal recovery time, you feel good and ready to get out there
  • You have to go out there and be moving
