Heart Health Month

Every Tuesday, at 10:05-11:00, I teach a Senior Aerobics class at the Centennial Recreation Center in Morgan Hill. It is such an inspiring class and I love watching these peeps get their groove on! February is heart health month and my class has a message for you! “Get that body moving, that blood pumping, and have some fun meeting new friends in class.”

For those of you who prefer to read, here is the basic transcript (for the heart disease portion only)In 1980, the world was ranked 11th in longevity, today we are 35th. Every 34 seconds, a person in the U.S. dies from heart disease. In your lifetime, a man has a 50/50 chance of getting diagnosed with cancer. A woman’s chance is a bit lower. Americans have the poorest health in the industrial world, despite spending the most per capita on health care.

According to the Center for Disease Control, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US. One in every 4 deaths is from heart disease. About 720,000 Americans have a heart attack each year.

The Framingham Heart Study – the longest study on heart disease, has concluded that cholesterol does NOT cause heart disease.

Heart Disease costs the US $108.9 billion a year.
By 2030, it is estimated to reach $545 billion.
The average heart attack patient’s bill is $92,000 if you live in California. If you live in Arkansas, it costs about $3,334.
