Aerobic Exercise – Slow and Steady or HIIT?

Aerobic exercise is defined as: Brisk exercise that promotes the circulation of oxygen through the blood and is associated with an increased rate of breathing. Why do we need it? For a healthy heart. And with heart disease responsible for the most deaths every year, it is pretty important!

There is a controversy in the fitness world. The debate is which method of aerobic exercise is better to burn fat. In one corner we have the slow and steady team…keep your heart rate at 120 beats per minute for 30-60 minutes. This would be like on a spin bike or a treadmill. My favorite way is walking at Harvey Bear with a friend or my dogs!

The other method is High Intensity Interval Training. My favorite ways of doing this type of aerobic exercise are mountain biking and boot camp. This is where your heart goes up high and then levels out. This is more fun, in my opinion, and more challenging.

Fitness experts debate over which of these methods is more effective in burning fat over the day. Since our bodies all respond to different things, why not try it out for yourself for a couple weeks. On week one, do the slow and steady method for at least 5 days. and see how your body responds. Then on week two, do the interval training. Either walk, run, or ride at a medium speed for 3 minutes, then turn up the notch for 2 minutes and then go all out for 1 minute. Repeat at least 5 times for a total of 30 minutes. Or go to Boot Camp at your local gym. This is super fun!

Either way, just get off the couch and get moving! What are you going to do first?
