The Latina superstar shares the impossible true story of her fight to realize her dreams in this powerful book and inspirational guide filled with hard-earned, heartfelt advice for all women striving for independence.
Those who give the best advice are the ones who’ve lived life the hardest—those who have not only survived but thrived after overcoming adversity. THE GIRL WITH THE SELF-ESTEEM ISSUES (HarperOne; October 13, 2020; $24.99) is the remarkable story of Rosie Mercado’s journey from helplessness to becoming a model, life coach, and daytime celebrity—and to see her body, caderas y nalgas, and all, as a gift.
When Rosie was only 19, the father of her newborn walked out with no warning. With no college degree, no career, and addiction to emotional eating, Rosie was overwhelmed. How could she take care of a child when she could barely care for herself? Yet despite her lack of self-confidence, the courageous young woman rose from the ashes—only to fall again . . . and again.
The journey included three husbands, three divorces, 4 children, and years of abuse, infidelity, broken promises, and sleepless nights. Rosie’s life was anything but easy, especially when her weight ballooned to 400 pounds. Yet she never ever gave up. When one door closed in her face, she picked herself up and knocked on another one. Despite the pain, the rejection, and the disappointment, there were small victories and successes. Each one gave her the strength to keep ongoing. Eventually, she found the courage to take control of her life, lost 240 pounds, and found the life she’s always wanted.
For women who feel trapped, isolated, fat, ugly, invisible, or less than; for the motivated, girl-boss, champions out there, The Girl with the Self-Esteem Issues unfolds with raw honesty, courage, and hope.

ABOUT ROSIE
I am a powerful Latina, a mama, a wife, I’m a life coach, and now, an author
I am here to share with you my memoir, “The Girl With Self-esteem Issues” where I’m just inviting women to own who they are, to step into their greatness, not let their past dictate their future not the number on the scale dictate their potential and just know that life lessons failure is just an indicating point of what’s not working
We got to move on, find momentum and not let that define our life
The darkest moments give me the strength to really get up and find out how much I can stretch and how much I could grow and not being a victim of my circumstances
Whether it was my three divorces, having assisted my brain, failure of a business or even failing in parenthood at some point
And then, dealing with heartbreak along the way, weight gain, and weight loss – there are just so many triggers that I have gone through
I think just acknowledging, you get to a point where you get sick and tired of that
So I had to step into doing the work of healing which was number one and then asking the quality questions
There were moments that I was happy and then there were moments that I was my own worst critic, my own worst bully of just body shaming myself
That internal voice plays a number on you and just coming to a place where life has to be better than this
At the age of 20 you could reinvent yourself, at the age of 30 or 40 you could reinvent yourself, at the age of 50 or 60 you could create something amazing and reinvent yourself
It’s not about age, it’s not about the number on the scale, it’s not about your past but it’s about the decision that you get to step into and just really step into your potential and your strength and understand that you’re worthy of creating anything
And that those moments of adversity, you could use them to push you forward
I was the age of 28, I had just gotten divorced
I’m going through so much physical, emotional, and verbal abuse knowing that if I stayed there, I was going to pass away
I was miserable, and feeling insecure that nobody else was going to love me, and that was it for my life
I finally got the strength to leave and then, I find that I have a cyst in my brain and I’m at my heaviest
I’m between 380 pounds to 420, going back and forth
And then, I no longer could speak properly, I can’t walk properly, I’m on seizure medication and other medication that I would just sleep, life is really throwing a brick at me
And just having that strength from my father saying, “you could cry along the way but your voice matters, your story matters, you’ve got to fight to look for an answer don’t give up for yourself and kids”
At some point, you wake and will realize that you have to fight for your life because this can be it
That was the moment where I realized that I have to do something
Life throws those little pebbles then little rocks and then life will throw you a brick if you’re not listening and wakes you up and I love when Oprah says that because that’s exactly what happened to me
It was a wake-up call to come to gratitude and appreciate every morning that I woke up with breath and understand the meaning that there was a purpose in my life that the revelation will come later
I had to take personal responsibility, I had to do something, I had to seek the healing nobody else could do it for me
WHAT DID YOU TO GET BACK UP?
I think the first thing is about self-care and self-love
Everything is seasonal and I had to give that moment in my life a different story
I’m being forced to look inward to look into what’s going on inside of me and that taught me the lesson that everything that was manifesting
The body will follow what the mind thinks
So everything was manifesting and it manifests in my brain because I was internalizing my thoughts, and I was my own worst critic
I traveled and I looked for different ways to find healing and it led to eating healthier not living by a diet but living by a lifestyle
I was finding myself, finding my spirituality, finding my faith, understanding what it was to love myself, and understanding the importance of letting go of toxicity in my life being able to stand up and say no
I went to the MRI and they showed me the image of my cyst and basically, they put me on seizure medication and other kinds of medication that i would just sleep
And from there I decided not to go back because automatically the solution was to cut into my brain and I decided I need to find something natural because I was scared
So I decided to knock on doors and I went to look for collation treatments, vitamin C treatments
I started healing my body by juicing, eating lots of greens, vitamins
There’s just a lot of things that worked for me but I went in search of and figuring out, and listening to what my body was telling me so I healed my body holistically
If you are living unhealthy your life is chaos or so many problems, that all stems from self-love and it’s a reflection of what’s going on in your spirit and your soul – it reflects everywhere
It’s not just about working out, it’s about doing things that make you feel peaceful and happy and a way to release those negative emotions
That way, when you eat you’re putting food into your body to serve as vitality and energy, and fuel to take care of the vessel that you’re giving to live life with purpose
For me, it’s not being a certain size or a certain number it’s just knowing that day by day, I’m making the conscious decision to become better and that it is a day-by-day process
I think it’s so important as human beings that we tap into that power of really listening to our body, to our soul, and really being able to learn to make the difference between spirit and ego
I think also the great thing about meditation is when you sit in silence because it really teaches you to look inward
When you just let the thoughts flow to come to this mental state where you’re really releasing and being able to connect, you really get to pay attention to those things and those distractions
It starts by understanding why you’re gonna do a transformation
Any transformation that happens on the outside first has happened on the inside and it starts with healing
You got to heal, you got to let go of the pain, and I know it sounds easy but it is a lot of work that is so worth it because the moment that you could talk about past traumas and triggers in a sense that you’re no longer crying, you know that’s part of it you’ve healed it
The best way to heal is to talk, the best way to heal is to learn, to feed your soul, feed your mind, feed your heart positivity things that will help you grow
Self-care is so important
Doing things that make your soul happy whether it’s dancing, singing, going out and walking, taking time to be alone, connecting with people that you love but that love you in the right way back and not in a toxic way
Knowing that you have power in your voice but it starts with healing doing the work
I’m 40 now and the brain system at the age of 28.
I’m proud to say that I am 40 I am living my best life
I’ve had so many life lessons but it’s taken several years because there’s the moment of healing and then you step into self-discovery and find what your purpose and your mission and then find how to say no gracefully and then being able to step into the to understanding what love really is
It’s definitely an inner journey that you do and for me, it really started off with healing, understanding my triggers, and being able to work with them because we all have triggers
It’s having the strength just to be honest with you and walking with authenticity – it’s about stepping into who you are
FAVORITE DAILY ROUTINES
I do a prayer every morning
And I feel like I have a sense of not only protection but I’m living with purpose and whatever I do, wherever I go, I feel that I’m faithfully guided
The second one is affirmations
And the next thing is listening to music
And then working on the things that I absolutely love that makes me happy
I love listening to podcasts, I love reading and I really push that because I think it’s so important to constantly educate ourselves to create momentum in our life and sometimes you never know what you listen to or you read that it sparks an interest, a new idea, a new goal and it takes you into this path
I love transformations and I love helping people out through that transformation being an invitation to step into your greatness
ABOUT YOUR BOOK
My book is a memoir
It’s about divorces and how we view failures
It’s about those dark moments that we find ourselves, feeling fat, ugly, unmotivated
And I talk about that in the book and how to overcome that and get to the other side
How to find healing and why forgiveness is important
What forgiveness does in our lives, how to transform the thoughts and how to really attain those goals and manifest them into a reality
I’ve learned to navigate my triggers, I’ve learned to acknowledge my triggers and I do not suppress them
I think we become better and better at tuning into spiritual by figuring out our triggers as long as we have the willingness to work through it then we will create the life that we deserve that we’re worthy of
Everything in life is a reflection of our thoughts
You have to learn to be present and when you become present and I just feel that life just gets better and you’re able to deal with these emotions when they come into life
YOUR PODCAST
I just launched my podcast a couple of weeks ago and it’s called, The Girl With Self-esteem Issues
It’s in English and in Spanish
I’m so grateful that I get to honor my Latino roots
WORDS OF WISDOM
Everything happens for a reason, the revelation will always come later
Do the inner healing and the success and the abundance and the love will eventually come
You have to heal what’s going on inside to get to the other side
It’s okay to say no
Say no to toxic relationships, say no to opportunities that don’t serve you, say no to the people that are just taking and wasting your time, say no to things that you don’t want in your life
You are not here to please everyone, and I think those are the biggest things that I’ve learned throughout my life
Those are life lessons that for me have been very empowering because saying no, it showed me that my voice matter
Doing inner healing taught me how to forgive and let go
I was afraid but God helped me, guided me, and showed me the way
