#132 David Krantz – Epigenetic Reporting

Meet David Krantz:

David has been an artist and musician for his whole life. He straight-up wired to pursue the things he is passionate about. And, helping other creatives reach their optimal health potential is where my head’s at these days. David taught himself how to create electronic music in college and never looked back… until he got burnt out from staying up all night to play shows, and not taking care of his self emotionally. He developed severe nervous system dysregulation (passing out randomly was scary), stomach problems, depression, and a real lack of motivation. He got deep into biohacking and learned how to take control over his own biology.

David recovered his brainpower while building synthesizers at Moog Music in Asheville, NC, and then pretty wild synchronicity happened. He was taking a walk on his lunch break and realized the logo on the building next door was the exact same as the logo of his favorite podcast with Dr. Daniel Stickler, a world-renowned expert on nutritional genetics and epigenetics.

David booked an appointment to get some bloodwork done and found out they were looking for someone with creating audio programs for meditation and stress relief. He took a job there and shortly after, Dr. Dan started an epigenetic training program for other doctors and coaches. He was convinced that David will make a good coach and asked him to beta-test his program. While David was skeptical of my ability to help people at first, he saw the potential he had. He quickly realized that combining his intuitive, non-linear way of seeing the world with a data-driven scientific perspective was a quick path to creating results for his clients.

Since then he had gone on to work with Google product designers, cancer researchers, Broadway actors, writers, creative entrepreneurs, and other artists to rewire their habits that were holding them back and boost their brain function. he was nominated as a 2019 Top 100 Healthcare Innovator by the International Forum for Advancements in Healthcare. He developed a proprietary genetic test for the endocannabinoid system, and have spoken at conferences like Bodyhacking Con and on podcasts such as The Elite Man Podcast, Psychedelics Today, Bio Alchemy and many more along with guys like Dave Asprey and Wim Hof.

David is currently an advisor to AMMA Healing as a specialist on the genetics of the endocannabinoid system along with Dr. Dan Engle (Onnit Labs) and other luminaries in the optimal health field. He also currently serves as the Director of Applied Psychoacoustics at Apeiron Center. He is dedicated to serving other creative people as he firmly believes that optimal health and longevity techniques shouldn’t belong just to the elite. In many ways, David feels like this work chosen him. Because of what he went through, he now has tools he wishes he had much earlier in his life to help his peers became better versions of themselves today.

ABOUT DAVID

  • I am a epigenetic health coach
  • Meaning, I help people understand how their genes influence their response to different food, lifestyle practices, substances and use that information to help them guide to a healthy lifestyle and wellness
  • Genetics is the study of how genes change their expressions in response to different stimuli from the environment
  • One of the really exciting things about epigenetic is that, it is also an influence that is transgenerational
  • Things that your parent did can be influencing your health and things you are doing now can impact not just your children, but also their children and all the way down the line
  • Your genes are just a loose guideline, they are not your destiny
  • What really matters more is what you do rather than what genes you have
  • As a coach, I help people understand between their genetic variations and different responses epigenetically that can be created because of the variations in response to different stimuli from the environment
  • I was very fortunate to have connected with a mentor at the right time and the right place
  • My background is actually in music – music production and electronic music
  • In my early 20’s, I went through some challenging health problems
  • When I went to a basic traditional doctors, they basically just told me that I am healthy young guy and that I am fine, but I was not fine
  • And I got into biohacking and the world of personalized wellness
  • As I was getting into that, this kind of miraculous synchronicity happened where I was listening to all of these podcast trying to absorb as much as information as I could
  • One day, at my lunch break at work, I was taking a walk and realize that the logo building next door was actually the same as the logo of one of my favorite podcast that I was listening to
  • It turned out that they are trying to hire someone who had skills in audio engineering because they wanted to do some meditation and brain wave programs and I start working with them to develop that stuff
  • At the same time, the doctor started developing a program teaching his method of analyzing genes that he has been doing in his clinical practice
  • I kind of had the benefit of learning from someone who had been doing this

HOW CAN A PERSON LEARN MORE ABOUT THEIR GENES

  • What I recommend is for them to do the epigenomic test which is the test that I use because it is very privacy secure
  • There’s a lot of misconception on how to use genetics well and a lot of the stuff out there is focused on deceased risk
  • That can be helpful to know, but that doesn’t really tell you what to do to change and manage that, and they are not really focused on wellness
  • The way I approach genetics is looking at it through an optimal wellness lens
  • It is a subtle distinction but it really allows you to leverage this in a way that it will create more opportunity in empowerment, to use the genes to move towards where you want to be rather than looking at it as something scary
  • In the first section, you can see the carbohydrates and this is a collection of about 10 or so different genes that influences response to carbs
  • Most of the sections have multiple genes in them because it’s not very useful to just look at one gene
  • The next section is the total fats. The EPO variants are really high impact and those are the ones if that made one less functional
  • Those are the genes that you don’t really want to do with keto approach with if you have them
  • There is a gene, epoB that’s a fat transported and sometimes people can get elevated triglyceride with this gene variant
  • Polyunsaturated fats come in 2 main forms which are omega-6 and omega-3
  • Omega-6 is found in nuts, seeds, or most plant forms of polyunsaturated fats
  • The ones that are found in whole foods are pretty good for you, but when you start to extract those fats like vegetable oil, canola oil or soybean oil, those are way too concentrated
  • Just pay attention to not get a lot of omega-6 oils
  • Omega-3 comes from fish and fish is very helpful with inflammation, cellular health, DHA
  • It is so important to look at multiple genes together because if you’re only looking at one of them, you’ll miss the bigger picture
  • I really try to stress out to my clients that intuitive eating really does matter the most
  • Plant sterile is kind of interesting because this transports cholesterol in the body and certain people have the propensity to bind more plant sterols and it can interfere with cholesterol synthesis and transport in the body
  • Some people with these genes have a higher risk of having those built up in the body which makes it difficult to transport in the body
  • The nice thing about genes is that it is not all bad
  • There are cool variants in your genes that you can leverage and take advantage
  • The gene PPARGC1A has to do on how your body responds to high energy demand activity
  • This the gene that controls mitochondria response and helps your body create new mitochondria to needing to create more energy or needing to create more body heat
  • B12 is pretty interesting because there is a couple of genes that influence how your body uses B12
  • The gone FUT2 codes for something that the immune system uses to identify blood group androgens
  • There are certain people called FUT2 non-secretor that don’t put these tabs on bodily fluid and this is about 20% of the population
  • The positive, you tend to have a higher level of B12, the downside is, you can probably have a diverse gut microbiome
  • People with FUT2 are prone to gut issues but it also tends people not to be prone in near virus
  • I always tell clients that blood markers are kind of the “the what” like, what’s going on with your body right now
  • But genetics will give you the understanding with “why”
  • Selenium is a nutrient I want to focus on and these genes are associated with lower ability to transport to your body
  • Sodium sensitivity gene has once collaborated with high blood pressure
  • Studies have shown that caffeine has less over benefit with cardiovascular in the long run and less beneficial in athletic performance
  • It is important to know that there are multiple parts of us
  • Phase one in liver enzymes begin the breakdown process, they start to make these toxins
  • Phase 2 will clean up
  • The intermediary products between phase 1 and phase 2 can be toxic as the original so it’s important to have both phase 1 and phase 2 working well together in the body
  • CYP2A6 has to do with a number of different medication and it also breaks down like nicotine, nitrosamine
  • Aflatoxin is is something blurred out in bulletproof coffee and that might be the reason why it’s effective to you because you might be sensitive to that
  • Resveratrol regulates those genes too
  • Acidulation helps detoxify histamines, smokes, and certain types of medication as well
  • Glutathione is master regulator detox in the body and it protects cells from inflammation
  • Narrow everything down and choose what is going to be helpful in your particular body and set of genes
