Episode #007 – Susan Beadles #becausewedocoolthings

ABOUT SUSAN

  • I have been in Morgan Hill for about 24 years now
  • I’m on this fun experience right now with my husband what we called, “cool things in our life”
  • I am originally from southern California
  • A couple of years ago, my nephew and his wife were actually at my house
  • And he said, “Aunt Susan, you do such cool things” and I said, “tell me about this hash tag thing” and we started the whole hash tag conversation
  • I said to Dan, “you know what, we have these 6 children together, the other one had just gone to college and the other one into the air force.”
  • And all of a sudden, it’s Dan and myself, and 3 dogs
  • We thought our lives have changed now
  • So we really started to look at it and say what do we want to do and let’s really enjoy the moments of our life and the time that we have
  • So we tried to pick something to do. We are really in a place where we can enjoy our time with our adult kids
  • A lot of times, I see pictures of myself with my boys
  • The goal is to do this on a monthly basis, even try to do it on a weekly basis – pick something fun to do
  • We try to do the great big events
  • For example, my eldest lives in San Francisco and I told him that we would go to Julia and Paul Child’s exhibit, and so we went there and that was our cool thing to do
  • It’s the little things
  • In life, you’re so busy in what you are doing and you forget
  • Show up for things in your life and also be prepared

FAVORITE THINGS THAT YOU HAVE DONE

  • One of the really great experiences I had recently was when 7 of my friends from junior high met in another friend’s house in Texas
  • And we had the most wonderful experience
  • And the best part of it was just being together and laughing
  • The other fun thing that we did, with my other son, Alex is, he and his girl friend love to cook
  • So we decided what kind of meal we were going to make
  • An exotic one or a simple one, and they all came over and we had so much fun in the kitchen cooking
  • That’s a whole different experience to just sit there, have a glass of wine, cook, and conversation
  • I have found at this time of my life, that it is much easier to actually sit back and enjoy the moments that you are in
  • And really recognize how grateful we are for all the things that surround us
  • The one thing that I want to work on now is to be on time
  • Be on time for things and with people
  • Dan and I also like to boogie board
  • When you are in the ocean like that, you cannot look at your phone
  • You have no interruptions

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF

  • To be on time
  • I am practicing how to do that – to be early
  • The reason why is because, there is no stress in your time frame when you are early
  • When you’re early, you show up more to things
  • The second one is be where you are when you are
  • Stay in your own feet
  • The other thing that I have learned is don’t create a situation that hasn’t even happened
  • It’s nice to be able to be very direct and have upfront conversations
  • And that’s what I like about what you are doing, Tracee
  • What I love about you is that you are very upfront and direct
  • You say what you mean

WHAT DRIVES YOU TO KEEP GOING?

  • When I was at the time in my life when I was doing triathlons, it was a moment in time
  • I liked it. I like the discipline of it and actually doing a triathlon and the way you have to get ready for it taught me a lot of discipline in my life
  • I did not start doing triathlons until I was 48 years old
  • It was also a time when two of my boys did cycling and triathlons, and my husband as well
  • I changed that part of my life because I wanted to be more relaxed
  • And because it was the time that my youngest went to college and the other one went to the military
  • And I had all these open spaces now
  • I had an open space in my brain because it was not occupied with all the things with the kids
  • And it was a little bit a sense of freedom
  • And so I thought of what do I want to do now
  • I have done salsa dancing lessons, belly dancing lessons, pole dancing lessons and ballroom dancing lessons
  • It’s when you jump into life and you start to do things that you will find that different feeling about yourself

BIGGEST CLAIM TO FAME

  • My three children
  • They have turned into themselves and they are just really wonderful young men
  • And I know it’s because of the parenting that they grew up in
  • It is huge to be a parent
  • Another one is when I was 48 years old and I decided I wanted to do a triathlon
  • That was a huge accomplishment because I was not a cyclist and I was not a swimmer, but I knew how to run
  • It was a huge accomplishment to get in to the water and swim because I was afraid
