I have been in different forms of movement my whole life
I was a runner, a dancer and now, I am able to work with individuals over the age of 40
I also instruct in dance
I love what I do, I love working with people and helping people have a better relationship with their body
If you are coming in from a fitness perspective, if you are coming in because of chronic pain, a lot of what I do is to look what is your posture
That tells me a lot where you are holding tension – what muscles are holding tension
In addition to that, we are having conversations. You are telling me all about your life and we start to see where the stress is from
I am also looking how you move, how is your body moving and understanding what you do in you daily life – what are your repetitive movements
Then, we put a plan together for you to help that
We are giving you exercises throughout the day and throughout the week
And I am helping you have that relationship with your body
I really encourage my clients to tell me what’s happening in their bodies
You are going to be the best person to tell me what’s going on. The more that I can help you constantly look inwards, the better
A lot of what I am seeing is rounded shoulders, heads falling forward
I am really seeing a lot of slumped over postures
And as you are talking to people, you are really seeing that they are carrying a lot of insecurities and fears about themselves, and that’s really showing in their posture
I use multiple modalities
I come out with the modality of NASAM, which is The National Academy of Sports Medicine and that’s where I am certified
Through that, we have a protocol that we utilize where we look at the structural misalignment, the muscle imbalances that you have that are causing this
We focus on loosening the muscles that are tight and strengthening the muscles that are weak
I want you to have greater stability
There are some times that I have clients come in and we just need to shake things off, I just turn on the music and we dance
Music will play a lot in what I do
Or maybe we just need to take a walk and talk things out
I am always encouraging my clients to do the thing that they thought they could not do
There is another program that I am working on, which is to be able to bring dance into a therapeutic group setting here in Denver
Movement is life
The moment you stop moving, is the moment you start dying
I have experienced that when I was in my late 20’s to early 30’s where I kind of went to a job, I came home, I sat and I watch television
I could feel my body. I gained a lot of weight, I was extremely unhappy and I wasn’t doing anything in my life
The secret to aging well is by moving your body
Find something that is allowing you to be fulfilled
The moment we start isolating ourselves, we start to have more discomfort in our body
If you have discomfort, it means something is not right
We can address it in the physical perspective, but we can look at what are we not addressing in our lives
Do we have stress in our world?
Particularly women, we have tons of stress in our shoulders
We can use the physical body as the first indicator
Another great tool that I love to teach people is listening to whether or not we are kind of leaning in or pulling away
It’s a lot of paying attention to going in to the words, mental and physical
ADVICE
Be kind to yourself
Be kind to wherever you’re at right now, and know that, it’s never too late
Time is your construct
Whatever you have been dreaming about, whatever you want to do, go do it and go do it now
Life happens when you start
Move your body, find any activities that allow you to engage
It’s okay to do it by yourself, it’s okay for you to have preferences
Go dance. Turn on the music and dance
Let yourself move, let yourself laugh, let yourself be seen and let yourself connect with people
I encourage you to try different styles of dances. For me, I don’t necessarily have a favorite because each dance that I dance, brings out a different touch of peace In my essence
The first thing that I would tell people is to shift their weight, whether they are standing or sitting so they are stacked
Having the chest open, is a lot of time, people pull they shoulder together
I like people to think in bringing their focus to the spine
If I can stack myself, I usually feel a sense of peace and ease
CLAIM TO FAME
When I was 10 or 11 years old, I was laying upside down on a monkey bar and someone shot a picture. I was in a British magazine
