Episode #005 Christine Fox – Super Slow Weight Lifting
MEET CHRISTINE
After spending the majority of my life as a fit person, I found myself 100 pounds overfat due to fertility drugs I was using to conceive our youngest child. Prior to trying to conceive I was a titled Figure Competitor with 4% body fat and here I am continuing on the fertility drugs for about four years and ended up at that heaviest weight. After having the baby I was so focused on him being “Our Baby” that I put all my effort into him and the other children. I forgot about myself. I would go shopping at the mall and see my reflection in the store windows as I pushed the stroller and I hated myself. I truly hated myself.
In 2010 I decided to finally get back to being fit since I was turning 40! I wanted to be fit at forty, not fat at forty! So, I started leaning out and working out. At the time I finally met my exercise hero, Ken Hutchins, and soon became a Super Slow instructor under his tutelage. I worked for Ken for awhile and kept on leaning out in the process. But at some point depression kicked back in and I started to self-sabotage, again!
It’s now 2018 and I’ve yo-yo’d my way up and down the scale over the last eight years. I finally told myself in April of 2017 that “I’m done”. I was tired of being fat! I needed to get off my butt and workout again, loss the fat and regain my positive self image I had lost years ago! And I did just that!
My Keto journey is something that I think of as a way of life. I know that this way of eating is completely sustainable with very little sense of missing out syndrome. I hope my journey will help someone else start theirs or maybe continue their journey! I hear from people on social media daily saying how I’ve inspired them and I tell them, they’re kind words inspired me to keep on going strong!
SHOW NOTES
ABOUT CHRISTINE
I am was a figure competitor for the national physique committee, but I had gained weight over the years – 255 pounds
255 lbs is my top weight and then I just start doing the low carb, reaching out to going back to my original roots similar to a Keto diet
That’s what I have been kind of focusing on the last several months on this year alone
Really focusing on Keto, getting recipes and helping other people with the Keto diet and getting back on being lean
I am down 115 lbs
I am in the middle of writing a book
It’s a Keto version book, and it is about dining out
With that being said, I am really at a maintaining point
I am not where I want to be, but when you rely on people feeding you, you rely on what you are asking for
I think when I have full control of my meals, I definitely can be exactly where I needed to be
The book is “Keeping Keto at Disney”
Currently, we are doing the Walt Disney World version
I am going to doing all the themed parks across the world
I have got 67 out of 90 done and the book should be done on end of November, beginning of December
I am funding my own food. I personally want full control over of what I am eating
The method is call the super slow method by Ken Hutchins
Ken came up with this negative 10 second positive with machines with low frictions
The key is to be as smooth as possible
As a super slow instructor, we don’t want them counting their own seconds
As ladies, we are always throwing face cream on
The reason why we are using night cream is because we are always told cells rejuvenate at night
If we just even think about that concept, we could realize that if cells are rejuvenating while we are sleeping, then why am I doing legs today and tomorrow doing my upper body, why not do the whole body
Do we really believe that if we are doing our legs only, that the muscles cells on our legs are only the ones that’s just fixed
So I definitely do head to toe because I do neck exercises
We are all about leaning out
The more women lean, the more smaller we become
We are not genetically built like men
For the guys, they are going to become bigger and they are still going to become leaner
Look at your hand, it’s what you’re going to put on your mouth
I have never sit around doing crunches to get 6 packs to compete, I have an 8 pack competing and did not do one crunch
The muscles are being used to a certain exercises
They can’t sit and do 200 crunches and think that fat on their stomach are going to disappear
90% diet, 10% workout
No matter what, it’s going to depend on what’s you’re going to put on your mouth
Let’s stop targeting body parts and let’s just work on our hands to our mouth and thinking about going to super slow and changing about those machines
My typical workout starts on the leg extension
After the leg press, I am doing the row
Then I will do abductors and adductors
I do have a tip with the abductor and adductor, and my tip is you are doing it wrong
The machines really need a seatbelt and they don’t have them
Let’s say I am on the abductor machine and instead of just sitting their flopping around, I put my hands behind my back
That keeps my upright and my back up against the seat
Usually, super slow is in a private gym
You would be done with an instructor for 20 minutes
You don’t want to be under load for more than 30 minutes
You could even do super slow on suit because you are not going to sit there and sweat to death
If you’ve got a muscle and we want that little tear and that tear grows and it becomes thicker
The more thick it becomes, then we are building on a pound of muscle mass collectively
Going on a decent speed on the treadmills, I am burning 2 Oreo cookies in 45 minutes
If you are burning this cookie calories, then great, but the minute you step off that treadmill, do you think you are still burning calories
Because you are not. There’s no movement, you are done
You did not build a muscle on a treadmill. You just ran and burned what you just ate for lunch
Super slow changed my life and I realized that I can compete if I want to compete
I got into competitions, won competitions, became nationally qualified all with zero cardio
Competing on my 30’s with teenagers and 20’s, and winning because I was not doing what they are doing
I was not storing body fat, I was just changing the way I ate and changed the way I worked
Once you become efficient in super slow, you can workout once a week
I think another flaw that people do is they don’t keep track
If you look at my book, every single workout says, “the seat settings”
It’s the same way that people track their macros, but this is way more serious
FAVORITE ACCOMPLISHMENT
It’s honestly the Keto diet and trying to get people not just for fat-loss but also for health reasons
It’s very hard to convince that eating fat can make their heart better
My mission in life is to get canola off your kitchen
