Experiencing Stress Relief with Tapping
A late-in-life doctoral student, Katie Nall earned her Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Florida Institute of Technology just before her 60th birthday while working full-time at a local community college. Dr. Nall is still employed full-time at the college, teaching several mathematics courses and providing lectures and training for college-sponsored events.
During her research on ways for students to excel in Mathematics (especially adults returning or starting college), Dr. Nall was particularly interested in helping students overcome fear, phobia and stress-related to math class and math tests. In 2010, she learned of the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT or tapping) and began offering the process to students who were open to a different approach. Students reported they passed math class, earned 100% on a math exam, and found math easier. It was at this time that she began serious training in EFT and became a Certified Practitioner in EFT. Dr. Nall now shares this knowledge not only with math students, but with others who struggle with stress, fear, phobias, and anxiety.
In addition to EFT, Dr. Nall is a licensed instructor from Personalities Insights from Dr. Robert Rohm in reducing communication conflicts utilizing DISC Personality Programs. From high school students to the board room, each group is excited to quickly assess personal communication preferences and see how to aid others in hearing others easier.
Dr. Nall works with individuals, teams, and groups who are ready to improve communication skills and decrease work-related drama. Utilizing employment background, extensive research, and dialogue interaction skills, she brings simple solutions designed to generate immediate and lasting improvements to internal and external communications.

ABOUT KATIE NALL
I’m in Florida
I am a Florida mathematician
But I’m a mathematician who helps others dissolve their waffles, I help them dissolve their worries anxieties fear frustration lethargy exhaustion, and stress
I started off doing that when a few years ago I got a chance to fulfill one of my life dreams and that was to finish earning my Ph.D. in mathematics education
During my research, I wanted to help students that I saw every day who were wanting to finish either a technical certificate or an associate two-year associate’s degree, a four-year bachelor’s degree, and sometimes even a master’s degree and stopped because they had one class left to finish which is math
I would talk to people and just even saying the word math I could see the change in the color of their bodies or they would have enough sweat coming off their palms that they could water my plants
People were so petrified just by the idea of the word math
As a mathematician who loves math and who sees math as nothing more than watching patterns and see and identifying systems and seeing relationships because to me that’s what math is all about, I was heartbroken to see how much pain people were in
So I was looking for a way to help math students overcome fear and anxiety and in doing that
In doing that, I found absolutely nothing
So I saw it as a word problem and as a word problem what you do is dissect it and figure out what information you have and what information you need to get and I realized that I was too focused on trying to find out how to help people overcome anxiety about math
I backed up a little bit and said, “how do you help people overcome anxiety at all?” and that’s when the year 2010 I found Nick Ortner’s tapping summit
So I bought the book, I bought the DVD, I listened to everything and the students would come in and they are all desperate and needed to find a way to attain their goals
One after another after another came in and said that they got an A in math which they have never experienced before
One guy thanked me because, without my “voodoo” stuff, he wouldn’t have gotten his Bachelor’s degree
I was thinking that I don’t have any idea what I’m doing and I wonder why this is working so I went back to get certified
Now that I’ve been trained and now I work and have clients literally all over the world
I will not only to help them overcome their test and math anxiety but also to overcome general waffles
I have been doing this for 10 years now
I have found though during this time of our history, people are really stressed and so i’ve been doing more and more of it
Most of us are feeling uncertainty, lack information, and loss of control so the stress level right now is probably the highest I’ve ever seen in my life
The word emotion has the word motion in it and how emotions are supposed to move through us and not stay stuck
They have done clinical studies worldwide that tapping is much more accepted throughout the world
However, in the United States, the veterans’ administration has accepted it as an acceptable practice to help our veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder
I’m a mathematician, I’m not a therapist, I won’t tell anybody that I’m a therapist and I don’t pretend to be a therapist but what I do is help people remove negative emotions and in removing the negative emotions sometimes people feel the effects within their body
As a mathematician, sometimes I struggle with the results that we get from this stuff
Math is absolute so you either have the answer or you don’t have the answer and instead of focusing on the technique which is where we should have been doing all along
We used to focus just on the answer and if you didn’t have the answer you were wrong and if you were wrong you were filling the blank
I really think that that’s why so few people are like you and me that didn’t grow up having such an appreciation and excitement about math and instead have fear and frustration
I have found personally that education is individualized, and that trying to teach one thing to the entire room when you don’t know where each one of these students is on the ladder of understanding, I have a problem with that
America ranks 27 in the world in terms of math ability
I think it’s because we try so hard to push the right answers instead of getting an understanding of math
But really, wouldn’t it be more interesting to figure how much sand is in a ball
I work at a college right now
I work there as staff so I get the blessing of being able to work with students who are struggling with math
From time to time, I am asked to do adjunct teaching of college-level math which I love
When I do adjunct teaching mostly, I teach my students how to tap
The studies have shown that when they compare EFT along with EMDR and cognitive behavior therapy which is talk therapy
If they look at those three that EMDR and EFT are way more effective than cognitive behavior therapy
The thing is with EMDR is you have to be sitting next to a therapist to be able to do that because you may have a reaction but with tapping, you can do it yourself
We have to release those negative emotions so that the positive emotions can come in
When you have the negative emotions and you are holding on to them, that is causing some kind of energy blockage that is affecting you physically and energetically
It’s in releasing the emotion that makes such a difference
When you talk about emotions, it doesn’t really matter how we manifest it, whether it is emotional eating, emotional drinking emotional, etc
Anytime we have a negative emotion, this process works
Different people have different things going on
One person may eat because they feel abandoned, another person may eat because they don’t feel worthy, so they all have different reasons
I’ve been doing this for 10 years and what I have found is that Canadians and people from the UK and Europeans are familiar with tapping, but American are not so much
Most of the work that I do is telling people, “what you think is your problem is not your problem” it’s usually emotional and there are ways to help emotions
